"My Chemical Romance Respond To Glenn Beck's Criticism"

My Chemical Romance Respond To Glenn Beck's Criticism
May 02 2011 | James Montgomery
Last week, during a segment on his Fox News show, conservative pundit Glenn Beck took aim at a performance of My Chemical Romance's "Sing" on "Glee," calling the lyrics "propaganda" and cautioning parents to be "über-vigilant" about the content their children watch, because "our whole culture ... is set up for you and the values you grew up on to lose."
Beck apparently failed to notice that the lyrics of the song had been used for months by MCR fans to send messages of hope to survivors of the Japan earthquake, or that the band had re-recorded it to raise money for the Red Cross' ongoing recovery efforts in the nation, and instead took aim at lines like "Nothing but a dead scene/ product of a white dream," which he inferred were brainwashing America's children.
"It's an anthem saying 'Join us,' " Beck said of the song. "How can you and I possibly win against that?"
Of course, aside from a few rather humorous tweets, the My Chem camp remained mum on Beck's attack ... until this weekend when frontman Gerard Way posted his thoughts on MCR's official site.
"I think the word Glenn Beck was looking for was 'subversion' not 'propaganda,' because I don't know what [the lyrics] would be considered propaganda for? Truth? Sentiment?" Way wrote. "And I can't tell what he's angrier about, the fact that it's how I feel about the persistent sterilization of our culture, or the fact that it's on network television for everyone to hear."
Way then poked fun at Beck for featuring incorrect "Sing" lyrics on his show — "Children that can talk about it/ Living on the railways/ People moving sideways" (the actual lyric is "living on the Webways") — by pointing out the fact that, well, kids don't exactly live on the rails these days.
"And railways? Is it 1863? Seen any children living on these lately instead of the Internet?" he wrote. "I'm actually shocked that no actual fact-checking was done on the lyrics. I mean, Fox is a major news channel, covering factual topics in an unbiased and intelligent ... oh wait."

Way concluded by quoting Beck's message that "You don't have to live by the standards that society has set," writing, "I couldn't agree more," and added an illustration of "an actual situation involving children 'living on the railways' with one Jimmy 'Backscratch Pete' Mulrooney, of Kansas City."
My Chemical Romance Unsure If Killjoys Will Return In 'Bulletproof Heart' Video

My Chemical Romance Unsure If Killjoys Will Return In 'Bulletproof Heart' Video
April 27 2011 | James Montgomery
When we last left the Killjoys, they were dead — gunned down at the conclusion of My Chemical Romance's video for "Sing." That clip was a continuation of the DayGlo outlaws' assault on the nefarious Better Living Industries, a campaign first launched in the "Na Na Na" video and one that's central to the theme of the band's Danger Days album. Since the Killjoys met their untimely demise, MCR have released a J-Pop-indebted video for "Planetary (Go!)" and remained mum on plans for just where Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys would go next. Fans have been clamoring for updates, but from the sound of things, they might have to wait a bit longer. Because while My Chemical Romance are already making plans to shoot a video for their next single, "Bulletproof Heart," they're still not sure whether the clip will pick up the story of the Killjoys, or if they're going to keep fans waiting for the next chapter. " 'Bulletproof Heart' we're actually still talking about, and we're not definitely sure yet if it's going to go back to that world," MCR frontman Gerard Way told MTV News. "Actually, I think that's almost cooler to stretch it out as long as we can, because, again, the story is so not important. The things that happened in those videos are really just metaphors for the way we saw the world, or stuff that really happened. Everything from hanging out with this crazy kid to getting shot in the head to all this stuff, it's all metaphorical. "I like a gap [in the story]; I think it should be a gap," he continued. "And then I think that when you do get that final part, when the right song comes along, I don't know that it'll make perfect sense. It's not supposed to." So, yes, Way realizes fans are dying for an update on the Killjoys' condition — he's heard the complaints, after all — but he's still not sure the band will go back to California 2019 for "Bulletproof Heart." Then again, it's still early. And those complaints can be compelling. "[The video concept] is so green right now, and we've gone through so many things," Way said. "It's really weird: People started to get disappointed. They're like, 'Aw, I thought they were making that video!' and it's like, 'Well, no, we never spent the money!' " What would you like to see from My Chemical Romance? Sound off below!

No, Billy Corgan hasn't regrown his hair. That is, in fact, Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance via the video screen at TBird Stadium. Thanks to my own curiosity and my friend Shea hooking us up with some free passes to VFest, I found myself braving the rain tonight to check out the emo juggernauts.
Despite major fawning by everyone from Spin to Stylus, my expectations were still quite low, based on my tendency to want to smash the radio whenever "Welcome to the Black Parade" comes on. That being said, I tried to go in with an open mind. And you know what? They weren't half bad.
I'm not going to run out for a copy of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm still going to want to turn the radio dial as fast as possible when "Welcome to the Black Parade" comes on. That being said, while I'm not a fan of the music - credit where credit is due - they're great performers. And honestly, sometimes when I find myself watching some critically "respectable" band who stares at their shoes and looks like it would be criminal to look the least bit excited, I could settle for a drop in music quality in exchange for a little glitz. Speaking of glitz, I'm also happy to see that the grande rock n roll tradition of shooting fire three stories in the air and blowing stuff up hasn't yet been lost.
It was also sort of nice to be in a crowd where the majority of people were both a) having a good time and b) not just having a good time because they were blitzed (although, there were definitely some people who were).
For the record, I have no idea what a "cancer bat" is, but I feel bad for the person who repeatedly texted the screen about losing their wallet.
Round two of the fest runs tomorrow, with some bands whose music I actually quite enjoy.
If you are heading down tomorrow, and you were hoping for some more arena rock size glamour via the Killers, you might be disappointed. Word on the street is that Brandon Flowers' throat injury is iffy for tomorrow. I am hoping that they grab some last minute headliner a la BSS stepping in for Massive Attack in TO last year, but I'm sure anything of that sort is a longshot.
Adjective, Dead Film Stars, the Ludvico Treatment, and It's a Living Thing are at the Lamp on June 13th.

Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys
My Chemical Romance - The Mad Gear and Missile Kid EPRecord Label: Reprise Records
Release Date: November 19, 2010
Who?
My Chemical Romance...no further introduction needed.
How is it?
Fun, fast, and fantastic. The Mad Gear and Missile Kid EP clocks in at just under six minutes, but provides a quick injection of musical speed that gets the blood pumping and the body moving. My Chemical Romance created the persona of the titular band as a way to add more depth to the universe they created in Danger Days, but there's no question they infused much of the same creativity found in their full album releases into this short EP.

My Chemical Romance Team With Fans On 'Sing It For Japan'
Band will release charity version of latest single and fan-fueled video, with all proceeds going to Red Cross efforts.
By James Montgomery (@positivnegativ)

My Chemical Romance have announced plans to release a charity versionof their song "Sing," with all proceeds going to the Red Cross' disaster relief efforts in Japan. But they're not doing it alone. Instead, they're reaching out to members of their MCRmy to help the cause.
The band is asking fans to submit videos, pictures, drawings and written messages to the people of Japan through social sites like Twitter — using the hashtag #SINGItForJapan — which they'll then compile into a video to be paired with the song.
"We'd like to send messages of hope to Japan from people all over the world. ... Go wherever your creativity and heart takes you. It could be as simple as you holding up a sign with '#SINGItForJapan' written on it, or anything else you can dream up," guitarist Ray Toro wrote on the band's official site. "From what we've seen on tour, we know you guys can dream bigger than we ever could. Don't be afraid to get your families involved. If you are inspired to do something alone, that's great too. But we encourage you to get a big group of people from your community together. We want Japan to know just how many people are behind them."
Toro added that the band got the idea after noticing that, in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis that ravaged Japan, fans were sending messages of support to the nation using the hashtag.
"After the news of the earthquake and tsunami spread, I did what most people did. I stopped and stared at the TV. I sat at the computer, constantly refreshing CNN in hopes of some good news," he wrote. "And I went to Twitter to see what people were saying. I noticed a hashtag, 'SINGItForJapan,' where you kids were writing messages of hope, saying prayers and sending your condolences and well wishes to survivors. It moved me in a profound way."
The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET. There's no news on just when the band's new version of "Sing" will be made available, but for more information — and to submit material for #SINGItForJapan — check out My Chemical Romance's official site.
